Today marks the launch of National Small Business Week (May 12-16), an annual event hosted by the Small Business Administration (SBA) to recognize and support local entrepreneurs and small business owners.
As a cosponsor, NLC encourages you to take some time this week to engage with your local small business community, whether it’s through an official National Small Business Week event or one of the strategies we recommend in our Big Ideas for Small Business report released later this week. Our report will discuss important strategies for how local leaders can create an ecosystem that is supportive of entrepreneurship and small business growth. For example, city leaders can adjust their staffing and resources at city hall to enhance their ability to respond to small business needs. Local officials can also connect entrepreneurs to business skills training and innovative funding mechanisms like microlending and crowdsourcing.
One of the easiest ways for city leaders to make a big impact is to celebrate the success of their small business community. National Small Business Week is the perfect platform to acknowledge the positive impact small businesses have on local economies and the livability of cities.
SBA is hosting a series of events in San Francisco, Kansas City, Boston, and Washington, DC that cover a range of topics including veterans’ entrepreneurship, access to capital, contracting with government, and online marketing strategies. Partner organizations are also hosting free online webinars all next week designed to provide technical assistance to entrepreneurs and small business owners.
